Burton's account of this expedition which was to cross East Africa from Berbera to Zanzibar was abandoned when , on the night of April 19/20 1855 Burton and his companions were attacked by Somali Raiders, William Stroyan was killed, Burton and John Hanning Speke were severely wounded and their supplies were pillaged. The value of this book is enhansed because Waterfield has drawn on material in the official reports and private letters, including the testimony of Somali and Indian members of the expedition about what they had seen and done the night of the attack.
