501 C A E Lea; M W Daly; British Academy. ON TREK IN KORDOFAN : the diaries of a British district officer in the Sudan, 1931-1933
New York Oxford; Published for the British Academy 1994 0197261280 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 8 vo,.
pict cloth, pp., ix, 304 pages, [12] pages of plates : illustrations, maps,, signature crossed out on front free endpaper, else a clean, bright copy,The life of the colonial district officer on trek has seldom been revealed in more detail than in Lea's journals from Kordofan, in the Western Sudan. Never intended for publication, these trek notes contain rare candor and informality, and give an unvarnished view of the land and people during a period of rapid social change. Northern Kordofan, especially Dar al-Kababish, was then little known to the outside world, and these notes therefore form an important and sympathetic record of the customs, economy and politics of the Arab and Nuba tribesmen who inhabited those regions. 543 Carte de Visite CDV Thomas D'Arcy Etienne Hughes McGee
Chatham, New Brunswick S.T. Whittier, Photographer, 1862 Very Good
carte de visite, (4 x 2 7/8 inches) 10 x 6 cm, b & w albumin photograph, double ruled border, Thomas D'Arcy McGee; (13 April 1825 – 7 April 1868) was a Canadian politician, Catholic spokesman, journalist, poet, and a Father of Canadian Confederation. The young McGee was a Catholic Irishman who hated the British oppression of Ireland, and work for a peasant revolution to overthrow British rule and secure Irish independence. He escaped arrest and fled to the United States in 1848, where he reversed his political beliefs. He became disgusted with American republicanism and democracy, and became intensely conservative in his politics and in his religious support for the Pope. He moved to Canada in 1857 and worked hard to convince the Irish Catholics to cooperate with the Protestant British in forming a Confederation that would make for a strong Canada in close alliance with Britain. He fought the Fenians in Canada, who were Irish Catholics who hated the British and resembled his younger self politically. McGee succeeded in helping create the Canadian Confederation in 1867, but was assassinated by Fenian Elements in 1868.   The photographer, S.T. Whittier, Chatham, New Brunswick, is not known to me. He is not on record as working in New Brunswick. Also, I have been unable to find this particular image of McGee. Please note that back copy states " copied by" S.T. Whittier. A rare and important image of a very significant player in Canadian history.

On the abdication of Otto, King of Greece, in 1862, the crown was offered to Prince Alfred, but the British government did not agree to the proposal.  In 1865 he was created the Duke of Edinburgh and Earl of Ulster.  . In 1874 he married the Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, only surviving daughter of Alexander II, Emperor of Russia and was given the honorary rank of a captain in the Russian navy. Fond of music and an excellent violinist, Prince Alfred took a prominent part in establishing the Royal College of Music.  An avid stamp collector, he was the first honorary president of the Royal Philatelic Society, and his collection became the basis for the royal collection. “Affie” (so called by his mother) was a committed naval officer and  in 1893 was made Admiral of the Fleet.  He died July 30, 1900 of a heart attack.
