red dec. cloth, 125 pages. illustrated, (some colored),folding genealogical chart, one of a limited edition of 1000, The Donaldson Line was founded by two brothers, John Donaldson and William Falconer Donaldson in 1855 in Glasgow.Their first ship was the Dumbarton built Joan Taylor a woode n sailing barque. By the 1870's the Donaldson line had established routes to Canada and had a contract to carry coal for the Canada's Grand Trunk RR. By 1900 the line had twelve cargo steamers working on the the Trans Atlantic routes. WW1 brought heavy losses, 9 of the companies 13 vesels were lost. By 1916 the company had reorganized as Anchor-Donaldson Ltd and was owned equally by Donaldson Brothers Ltd and Anchor Line (Henderson Brothers) Ltd, a Cunard subsidiary. The company later developed service to South America and cargo service to the US. In 1921 it took over the operation of the Canadian Government's Bristol , Swansea , Canada service. The Great Depression brought the company misfortune and again reorganization. In 1939 the group was re-organised as Donaldson Brothers & Black Ltd and many of the subsidiary companies were terminated.The beginning of WW II found the company with a fleet of 21 ships 14 of which became war losses. After the war the company continued service but entered a period of slow decline until containerization brought an end in 1967. This book, a Centenary history, serves also as a genealogy of the Donaldson family.
