Fredericton, New Brunswick The Journal Office First Edition Printed Paper Wraps, Poor Paperbound 12 mo (15 cm)
no date (1898?) printed paper wraps, string stiched at spine, 133 pp of 146? present.by Martin Butler, author of "Maple leaves and hemlock branches." text is toned, front wraps i chipped with edge losses, ink notations at foot to title page, pages are turned at corners, a very delicate copy of a rare item of New Brunswick poetry offered here incomplete with approximately 13 pp missing at the rear, The volume is parinted on cheap paper and it is rare to find it in any reasonable condition since not many examples survived. Martin Butler was , by his own defination, a poet, printer, peddler, editor, patriot...Butler’s early boyhood was spent on the Salmon River in Kent County, N.B., on his father's farm. His father was a rural labourer of loyalist and Irish origins, who made a hard living cutting wood and working farms Butler's memories of his early days were mixed, and in one account he described himself as “born in a wretched hovel, cradled in penury, denied all the joys and amusements of childhood.”Butler was the youngest of 11 children, only 5 of whom lived beyond infancy. Butler began work at age 11 as a storekeeper’s helper at Kingsclear, where he also learned to set type.In 1871 the family removed to Maine. Butler worked in the lumber camps and then joined the F. Shaw Brothers tannery operations at Grand Lake Stream. In 1876 his right arm was mangled in the bark-grinding machinery and subsequently amputated. Butler appealed to company headquarters in Boston but received no compensation. To support himself he later turned to work as a pedlar in rural communities along the Maine-New Brunswick border Circa 1873 Butler began to contribute correspondence and poetry to local newspapers. His writings detail the bleak social landscape of the rural industrial environment, where “the withered and broken hearts of the largest portion of humanity” were mocked by the “mystic grandeur” of the surrounding forest. His first collection of verse Maple leaves and hemlock branches was published in Fredericton in1889. Butler's second volume on similar themes, Patriotic and personal poems (Fredericton, 1898?). is offered here. Butler’s principal achievement was the publication for 25 years of an independent monthly newspaper. Established in Fredericton in 1890, Butler’s Journal was to advertise itself as “devoted to national independence, literature, current notes and social gossip,” a description later modified to “home literature and social reform.”

Born at Hammond River, New Brunswick he began his working career in the employ of Keator & Thorne's merchantile establishment on Prince William Street in Saint John. Later he became a clerk and writer in the law office of Duncan Robertson, a noted barrister in Saint John. He was later found guilty of stealing from local stores including from the store of his previous employer, Keator and Thorne and was sentenced to two years in the Saint John jail. In 1842 he turned up in Dryden, New York and his criminal life took to an ever more sinister path culminating in murder but not before in 1869, he presented his theory of language origins "The Method of Languages" to the American Philological Association. Rulloff authored the book, "Method in the Formation of Language." thought by many to be a worthy work on the subject. His brother William Herman Rulofson (September 27, 1826 November 2, 1878) became a successful photographer, who along with his partner, H. W. Bradley, was considered one of the leading photographers in the city of San Francisco Rulloff's hanging was the last public execution held in New York.Rulloff's final words were "Hurry it up!
