Their first international event was the World Amateur Rowing Championship, at the International Exposition held in 1867 in Paris. The Saint John crew, composed of Robert Fulton, George Price, Samuel Hutton and Elijah Ross, with their manager Sheriff James A. Harding, travelled to France with the help of money raised by the citizens of Saint John and a donation from the province. The crew was not treated well by the European press who called them "quaint" and "strange looking". Their boat, described in the European newspapers as "a curious old-fashioned outrigger" outweighed the sleek European boats by more than 100 pounds. The Canadians also had an unconventional rowing style with a foot-guided rudder instead of a coxswain. The crowd was astonished that the Saint John team took the first event with ease and in the second event out-distanced the competition by a full three lengths. News of the Paris Crew's victories spread quickly at home. They were greeted by huge crowd with a 21-gun salute, a reception and a cash prize. postage wil be reduced..

INTO THE BLIZZARD : walking the fields of the Newfoundland Dead, Winter Michael
7 Winter Michael INTO THE BLIZZARD : walking the fields of the Newfoundland Dead
Toronto Doubleday Canada 2014 0385677855 / 9780385677851 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine Hardcover 8 Vo,.
cloth, 339 pages, illustrated, pictorial endpapers, a fine copy in protective mylar jacket, Michael Winters narrative follows two parallel journeys: the first is that of the young men who came from Newfoundlands outports, fields, villages and narrow city streets to join the storied regiment that led many of them to their deaths at Beaumont-Hamel during the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916. The second is the authors, taken a century later as he walks in the footsteps of the dead men to discover what remains of their passage across land and through memory. Part unconventional history, part memoir-travelogue, part philosophical inquiry, the author uniquely captures the extraordinary lives and landscapes, both in Europe and at home, scarred by a war that is just now disappearing from living memory. 2014.
